Using Link Diagnosis to Check Backlinks

Link Diagnosis is one of the Best Tools in my big SEO Tool Bag

First, before we discuss Link Diagnosis we have to cover a few points. Getting backlinks to your website from trusted authority sites that are “do follow” or more properly “dofollow” continue to be the single best way to increase your PageRank and subsequently your Google, Yahoo, and Bing rankings. We will talk more about “do follow” in another post, but for now I’ll just say that they are much more powerful in terms of providing “link juice” to the target site than their weaker cousins the “no follow” links. “No follow” links are certainly not worthless, but in terms of their numeric value contributing to the Algorithm calculation for PR, they have very little value as compared to their powerful cousins the “do follow” links.

A link like this:
<a href=”http://webdesignworkplace.com”>NJ web design</a>
sends part of the PageRank from the source page to the target page (and it drains some PageRank from the source page)
This is called a “good link” or “do follow” or a “dofollow”.

A link like this:
<a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://webdesignworkplace.com”>NJ web design</a>
sends no PageRank from the source page to the target page (although it still drains some PR from the source page).
This is called a “weak link” or just a “no follow”.

So as SEO Specialists, we always want to look at the links going to a page. We want to know 5 things about each of these links primarily, but there are more qualities to these links that we will examine later. The 5 most important factors about an inbound link to a page are:

  • the URL
  • the link class… is it dofollow or nofollow
  • the anchor text
  • the pagerank of the source page
  • the number of outbound links on the source page

Yahoo has always reported to the general public more honestly about it’s awareness of links than Google ever has. So we can go to Yahoo SiteExplorer and look at a site and see most of the links that Yahoo knows about. We can also go to the Yahoo search bar and type:
link:webdesignworkplace.com
Yahoo automatically starts SiteExplorer and it spills the beans on everything it knows

Our friendly neighborhood Google Operators Cheet Sheet tells us how to use the link: command

You should also know this all time favorite of mine, the GoogleGuide

But here is the stingy and threadbare return from Google when we issue the command in real life:

And here is where Link Diagnosis comes in handy.

When I run a report on my main site it tells me the 5 key indicators I need to know ab0ut the inbound links to my homepage:

As you might imagine, Link Diagnosis bases this report partially on link information it gets from Yahoo and partially on information if gets from Google (PR).

Link Diagnosis is only available as an add-on to FireFox browsers and it can write an optional .cvs file with all your information so you can sort it to your hearts content and look only at your powerful “do follow” links if you wish.

I give Link Diagnosis a “10″ because it’s free and an outstanding tool for professional SEO’s.

By the way, I have not been paid in any way by Link Diagnosis or any by other entity  for this review.
