Affordable Web Designs – Comps

Whether it’s affordable web design or high priced web design, the initial artwork presentation sent to a client for approval is usually the comp. Or the Photoshop Composition as it is otherwise known. The comp is a starting place where the web designer can get approval of his or her artistic concept. And in legal regards, once the comp has been agreed to in writing, both the client and the designer have a concrete example of what has been offered and what should be delivered. For graphic artists, their project IS the comp. In terms of building a website, the artwork and the comp are about 10% to 20% of the total project work initially. As the number of pages in a site go up, then the artwork becomes a smaller and smaller part of the hours invested into a project. But the impact of the comp and the artwork is obviously huge and it forever sets the tone and many factors for the site.

Here are a couple comps I was given by WordPress Designer Lauren Billings. She is one of the best WordPress Designers in the world today and certainly the best I’ve ever worked with. There are literally tens of thousands of HTML designers in the world and there are only hundreds of true WordPress Artists. The WordPress artist can fit a beautiful design onto an existing website framework. That makes it better than HTML because it takes advantage of the dozens of features that make WordPress a superior platform for most business and personal websites.

Affordable Web Redesign Case Study Non-Profit Organization

In 2004 I was approached by a board member from the New York Sailing Club to redesign their existing site. The existing web design was more of what I would call “functional”. It had been put together by members of the group who were volunteers and not professional designers. Now this was the group that organized the 1976 American Bi-Centennial Tall Ships event in New York Harbor. And for a group like this, they eventually grew out of their home grown 6 page website and they needed professional support.

So I began to unravel the intricate web of arrangements within the non-profit organization and it took about a year to get the new 23 page site launched. First lesson – you need patients to work with an established Non-Profit Group. And in general, projects like a new website can literally take a year from start to finish.

Originally, one one club member owned the domain name, another who was an attorney maintained the disclaimer, another was the designated webmaster, still others were in charge of the Newsletters, another board member scheduled all the events, and so on and so forth. So I learned the most difficult part of working with an NPO is finding out who owns what and how to contact them.

The next part I discovered was that I was not working for a single boss, or even a management team, but this club would allow every member to make comments and suggestions about every single detail of the new website. There was a clear cut management withing the group, but these were boat owners and they tried to implement a pure democratic ideal where everyone could share in decision making as much as that was practical. They were also a group of highly educated and successful people such as lawyers, doctors, nurses, and so forth. So management decisions like “what color background do you want” took a long time. And after they were implemented, they were often changed.

My original 23 page site was built with HTML, CSS, and Project Seven Javascript Menus using Dreamweaver and Photoshop. It was artistic, it contained a lot of nice images, and the hierarchical order of the menu system made sense and it worked. So the site functioned well for the next 3 1/2 years and I started building out sites using WordPress exclusively. So this would seem like an easy “Affordable Web Redesign” upgrade case. Wow !!

I started with a Studio Press Child Theme called Serenity, which was one from the Genesis Framework. And when I was finished I had an 84 page site with almost 150 photos and the club members were thrilled. Some of the comments I got were “stunning”, and “could not believe how nice it looked”.

One of the keys to success with this affordable web redesign was getting a beautiful design that I could get 50 club members to agree on. My friend Lauren Billings worked on the art and color palettes. She’s one of the best WordPress graphic designers I’ve ever seen in the business. I needed something unique and sharp and that’s why it’s best to put a project together like this using world class experts in their areas. And ones that are patient !!

Did Your Ranking Get Hurt By A Spammy Site?

An MFA site is a “Made For Adsense” site that delivers Google Paid Advertisement clicks to make money… but the site itself typically strips content from other sites using robots, and it provides no useful purpose to surfers. MFA sites are spam. But sometimes these spammy sites get to the top ranking in a competitive phrase and that is when they become more than just spam, they can hurt your hard earned ranking.

You followed all the rules according to the Google WebMaster Guidelines. You watched 40+ Matt Cutts videos to glean useful information to help you to rank higher and avoid violations. And after all that, you got beat by a scrapper site. Wow !! Well here is what you can do… report them to Google !! Simple… yes. And I can tell you from experience – they do listen when you report sites that are in violation. They sometimes will remove the offending site from the first page of results.

How do you…?

Submit A Spam Report to Google

  1. Go into your Google Webmaster Tools account (create one if you do not already own one).
  2. Follow this golden trail https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreport?hl=en
  3. Submit the report and check this to verify they got it  https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/message-list

Here is a video from Matt Cutts – the Google Spam Boss – telling the public that they do indeed take the spam reports seriously. On top of that if the spam site is having a serious negative impact on quality rankings, it will be dealt with at a higher priority. I presume that the spam site in the annotated screen print below taking a #1 ranking for a hugely contested competitive phrase will get looked at soonish.

WordPress for Non-Profits

WordPress is a perfect website choice for many non-profit organizations. We just did a site for a local Public Library and it’s a good example to demonstrate the message here. I’ll make a list of reasons but first mention that WordPress started out as a blogging platform, and it quickly evolved into a framework that allows rapid website development. Almost everyone has heard of “blogging”, or “Blogger” or “WordPress”, but the word is still getting out that there has been an absolute revolution in web design created by WordPress. Non-Profit organizations are switching to WordPress in short order these days and for good reason:

Reasons Why WordPress and Non Profit Organizations Go Together

  • WordPress is free to use and it”s Open Source so it’s supported by hundreds of developers and thousands of organizations.
  • You do not need to be a web designer or a computer programmer to build and maintain a WordPress website or to add new content.
  • WordPress websites have a structure that major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing / MSN like, which makes getting your information into the search engines a lot easier and faster.
  • The flexibility in terms of appearance and functionality is nearly unlimited. WordPress can display video, images, slideshows, .pdf’s, and text using artistic rendering as limitless as the owners imagination.
  • WordPress acts like a CMS content management system. When the content is added, it actually gets put into a database. So you can change the outside appearance of the site – the look and feel – but still have exactly the same content.
  • It is easy to find an affordable professional to help with building or changing a WordPress website.
  • Programmers write free WordPress “plugins” for every conceivable additional function you could possibly use with a website so you might never need to custom manufacture a software module. It’s all “off-the-shelf” and free.
  • There are tons of resources to help you learn about using WordPress from books, to videos, to public access seminars and meetups.

Buy A Custom Website

You want to buy a custom website and with a bazillion different choices you don’t know where to go. Web Design Workplace has been helping small businesses, professionals, and non profit organizations answer this question for almost 10 years. Our standard answer is to recommend potential clients look at our template showcase and base price tag of $500 and compare it to everything else you can find anywhere – and at any price. No pressure. We are one of those “the front light is always on” places that will be here tomorrow whether you buy a custom website from us or not. We would love to have you as a satisfied customer by the way… but we do better just waiting patiently and answering questions.

Buy a Custom Website Recommendations

  1. Write down your budget and website goals before you go shopping.
  2. Ask friends, family, and business partners for their recommendations for a good web design consultant or company.
  3. Do an internet search and narrow your field to 10 companies and consultants.
  4. Compare the demo examples from your 10 finalists and anyone that was personally recommended to you by your personal network.
  5. After all that, call Web Design Workplace and discuss your situation and get 25 years worth of professional hands-on experience for free !!

What to Look Out For When Buying a Custom Website

The final thing to recommend is to look at the proof any company or consultant offers you that they can get a website ranking. There are so many cyberspace claims that a company “knows SEO” when in reality they are really good story tellers and they have nothing to show in terms of ranking high against competitive sites. There are thousands of websites used as examples by web design firms that you can see have absolutely zero Google PageRank. So the proof they are showing is that they can launch a website and get all zeros for search. Will sites that earn a PageRank zero help when your potential customers are trying to find your product or services using search? No way. Web Design Workplace charges up to 90% less than other firms for comparable web design and SEO services. And when you ask to see the proof we can put many examples right on the table.

Here is a website we designed in 2008 using a Brian Gardner design – from his original WordPress Premium Theme Company “Revolution Themes”. It was one of his game changing themes called the “Pro Media”. This particular site has been described as “stunning eye candy” by many surfers and design professional alike. And in terms of SEO… it has been #1 on google for the very competitive phrase “Manhattan Bakery” since 2009. It gets over 40,000 unique visitors a year and since February 2010 it has consistently done around 9 or 10 GB in bandwidth a month. That’s right – 10 Giga Bytes of bandwidth a month… for a bakery site.

Now if you want a stunning site custom made for your business – at up to 90% less than anyone else for a comparable product – give the owner of Web Design Workplace – Mal Milligan a call at 201-696-5375. If we can outrank 1,000 bakeries in Manhattan – and we can – we can help your business to look great and rank well on Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Switching a Target Phrase

You have a website and it is ranking for a target phrase on your homepage but you want to change it. And that brings up the 64 dollar question:

How long will it take Google to reconfigure your target phrase?

Web Design Workplace  was #1 and #2 for the phrase “NJ web design” for 6 months and we changed our homepage completely yesterday. We are switching our homepage target phrase to “affordable web design” now. It’s got lots of competition from some players that have been entrenched on the first page for a very long time – years in fact. But we decided we had to get out of the “NJ web design consultant” competition becasue we were not getting the number of clients we wanted. We were also shifting the business from doing a lot of higher end SEO jobs to making lots of affordable webs instead.

So look who took over 12 hours after we rolled out the new homepage, a guy who has multiple websites for the same company and gets away with it all the time somehow. The #1 and #2 now are the guy who black hats Google and seems to get away with it. What is a black hat? A person who is bad and uses tricks and cheats to get more clicks. The #3 guy now (Barry Wise) is a great guy and a real SEO pro. So at least we know Google is telling us it knows we changed our target phrase. We got moved to positions #5 and #7 for a phrase we dominated until we cut over the new content and look and feel for our site. Now begins the long march for the new target phrase…

We just answered the first part of the question… it takes a matter of hours for Google to recognize a big change has occurred and start to reflect those changes in the main index. Wow – it used to take weeks or months but now it was that fast. Part of the reason is that our website has been a solid PR4 for over a year. We are very proud of that. Google spiders sites that have higher page rank more often so we expected they would find out soon that we did the big change.

How Long Till We Start to Rank for the New Target Phrase?

We are not in the top 500 yet after 12 hours. That is expected. If I had to bet on this one, I would say we will enter the index for our new target phrase somewhere between 51 and 550 over the next week. And if we blog a lot and get more new links we can move up to the 40′s within a month. But this is what we do for a living here and I can tell you it is so much fun we are laughing our butts off and having a great time. From the armchair we can only guess. Top 40 within a month, top 10 within 2 months. That’s my guess. If we are very lucky and work hard, we might be able to get on the first page (Top 10 results) for our new phrase withing a month.

Where are the Rules For Switching a Target Phrase?

Year ago we thought the black hat game was the fun one and we found over time there was a lot more reward playing by the white hat rules.  If you want to know where those white hat rules are… look no further than Google WebMaster Central. The guy who uses multiple sites to try to get more clicks is a looser. He’s a cheater. Sure he is gaming the Google system now… you can see for yourself by looking at the sites. But in the long run Professional SEO’s like our team and the hundreds of SEO’s we know all frown on the black hatters for being non-professionals. We will keep you posted as to our progress on the new phrase!! Cheers everyone !!

Winning Google Images

I built a WordPress site for a friend to showcase his bakery products and I am currently the #1 result for “chocolate strawberry cake”. I’m so honored for a number of reasons. Google images reports it has over 3 million images results for the phrase, and my big beautiful Nikon picture is on the top of that very big, and mostly delicious looking pile of cakes.

How Did I Win the Chocolate Strawberry Cake Popularity Contest in Google Images?

  1. Well, first, I took quality photos with a camera that might be considered an entry level professional rig – the Nikon D-60. I also bought 3 Nikon lenses and a professional grade Nikon flash unit. So I got started with about $2,000 worth of photography gear.
  2. Next, I made the picture look as beautiful as I could using PhotoShop CS3. I’ve actually been using Photoshop professionally for more than 15 years and it’s too much fun to call it part of my work.
  3. I put several sizes of the picture on the website with the largest being about 1 MB in total size and 2500 pixels wide. Wow, that’s a lot of high resolution cake.
  4. I got the site ranking well and garnered an overall PR2 for the homepage which helps me to get interior pages some home made link juice by linking right from my own homepage.
  5. Eventually the picture got really popular and the website for the last 4 months has done nearly 10 GB (Wow that’s Ten Giga Bytes) of bandwidth a month. For a bakery that’s through the roof. I have Google Analytics installed on the site so they do know how popular the site is. I don’t know if that is factored into the reason they put my picture at a #1 position but I would hope so. This is one of the Holy Grail questions in SEO and I need to get to the bottom of it. Did Google actually apply the popularity it can grasp from Google Analytics to help rank this photo at #1? I would love to know and I will let you know if I find out.

So my advice to you if you are looking for a #1 picture in Google images is “don’t try to game the system”. Just walk the walk. Is that the “Cake Walk?”

Web Design Consultant

Web Design WorkPlace is the #1 “Web Design Consultant” on Yahoo. Here is the photographic proof. We are very proud to achieve this milestone achievement.

After more than 9 years as a full time Web Design Consultant to get the #1 position in the natural results on Yahoo for the phrase is very gratifying. We are going into a redesign phase during the next week and this will stoke our furnace moving forward.

We are Web Design Consultants, but we are also SEO Search Engine Optimization Experts as well. Can you be #1 for a category on Yahoo where they report 500 MILLION results without being an SEO expert? No way – no how.

Sometimes being #1 on Yahoo or Google is short lived. We are going to enjoy it while it lasts though. There is a never ending battle to be the king of the hill and in SEO to be on the top of a hugely competitive phrase like this makes us the targets of thousands of other I.T. firms. Honestly we don’t care that much because our focus is working for the best customers in the world providing the best web designs in the business. Whether it’s WordPress web design or HTML.

Web Design Consultants have more fun.

Web Design Workplace has always been just a bunch of consultants who have worked together for years. We all worked together for one company or another and as independent consultants now, we work on each other’s projects as requested or needed. Do we have more fun now – you betcha. Working for a big box company has some advantages and some big disadvantages. For one thing, as a group of world class consultants, we never ever have to lay down a corporate lie to a customer. It’s not in our play book and never will be. You always get a straight shot with us and we sleep like babies at night knowing we did the best job for our clients that could possibly be done. Down to the last pixel in design and ranking in SEO.

NYC WordPress Meetup May 2010

I’ve been going to the MYC Meetups since the summer of 2009 and they have been great. I find people to chat about WP with that can really not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. The NYC WP meetup groups are friendly – informal – and fun. I personally recommend – Regards Everyone – Mal

Learnin about WordPress 3.0 !!! All us WP Nuts have been in the trees looking toward the horizon for version 3.0 to arrive. Steve Bruner has another great session in store with BOONE GORGES from Queens College leading the topics. He will include:

* Multisite setup – What, How, Why,
* New custom post types – why, how
* The new most awesome menu system – what and how

WordPress 3.0 for Nonprofit Organizations

WordPress is a fantastic website platform for an NPO Charity or Business because:

  • it’s free
  • there is support via forums and dozens if not hundreds of sources
  • it ranks well on Google
  • and it’s easy to use.

The new version to be released sometime in May 2010 will be even better geared for the average NPO.

WordPress 3.0 Has Better Features for Non-Profit Organizations

NPO’s can always use free stuff that rocks, and WordPress is one of the diamonds in the freebie bag along with Open Office and Linux. The next version will have drag and drop menu building which will make it so much easier to use. Along with the super flexible menus, version 3.0 will be Multi-User right out of the box. Yeah !! You know medium sized NPO’s rarely have just a single website. They more often than not will have a different web for each regional location or each category of support. By having a Multi-User option, administrators can setup and manage all their different websites from a single control panel. In terms of manageability, this puts the average WP installation into a new league of power and control.

In addition to the major features, there are a good hand full of other enhancements like a new default Theme called “Twentyten”, customized post types so there is more variety than just “posts” and “pages”, authoir templates, and the ability to use URL shortcode -  you to get a shortlink for your post based on your own domain name.

And did I mention it’s FREE !!
